We love game jams around here. They bring such an exciting burst of energy and creativity. It is amazing what people can put together over such a short timescale.
The Game Maker’s Toolkit (GMTK) Game Jam has become a highlight in the gaming calendar, showcasing incredible talent and creativity from developers around the world. In 2024, the event brought forth an array of innovative games that pushed boundaries, explored unique mechanics, and captured the hearts of players. The theme of the jam this year was “Built To Scale”. Here are some of our favorites (in no particular order).
1. Shutterbug
In “Shutterbug,” players resize their browser in order to take photos of different bugs in the environment. The concept itself has been done many times before but what makes the game standout is the fact that it is “built to scale” in that as you move and resize the window you see different parts of the environment. It is a really neat effect. The second thing that stands out from this one is the beautiful bokeh effect that changes as you zoom in and out of the different subjects. Really, super cool.
If you play this one just one tip is zoom way in for the camera to take a shot on its own. I spent a fair amount of time trying to press different button to take a photo only to realize after a while that there was no such button. D’oh!
2. Little Slime Blows Up
Puzzle platformers are a classic genre of game jams. In Little Slime Blows Up, players control a small slime character who uses “explosive” abilities to navigate various levels filled with obstacles. The goal is to reach the star at the end of each level. The little slime character is just so cute and the music is so chill and nice. You can’t help but love this game.
3. Scale Mail
With Scale Mail you are trying to pack bags for customers so they can be shipped. This game should resonate with any parent that has tried to pack all the stuff in the car before taking a road trip. The matra in our house is “Yeah it will fit!” In Scale Mail you can use magic to scale the items before placing them in the bag. This, however, has the disadvantage of making them heavier (not sure how reducing the size of an object gives it more mass but just go with it because it works) and you have a weight limit you need to work within. It is a fun little puzzler with a great aesthetic. Definitely, try this one out.
4. Picture Perfect
Kind of saved the best for last on this one. This is another picture game but the story behind it is just so good. The artwork is beautiful and the music is great too. It is amazing what people can do in four days. Anyway I won’t give too much away here but you should definitely check this one out it is really amazing.
