Here is our list of the best indie games on switch. What is an indie game you ask? Well we have a nice rundown right here. These are some of our favorites in no particular order:
1. Celeste – Extremely OK Games
Technically it is “a game about climbing a mountain” but really it’s about so much more. Much has already been said about this wonderful game. It has a sweet old school beautiful pixel art style. The story is great. The music is fantastic. The game-play is so polished but also so difficult. Oh, and you can speed run it if you want. You just can’t go wrong with this game (which is why it is so popular). If you haven’t played this one do yourself a favor and go pick up a copy now.
2. Overcooked – Team 17
If you have kids at home – or are just a kid at heart yourself – then you must play overcooked. My family and I have had a blast with this game. It is at its best when you have four players going at it at the same time. It’s rare to get such an intense coop game but when you are all in the kitchen together things can get heated. This one is best if you have other people to play with locally but if you do – grab it and get in the kitchen! Bonus: If you want even more levels Overcooked2 is just as good.
3. Hollow Knight – Team Cherry
The Metroidvania monster that is so beautiful to behold. If you like exploration and going down the rabbit hole then this is the game for you. Its hand drawn art style is the stuff of legend. That in conjunction with a massive world to explore make this not just one of the best indie games on switch but one of the best games on switch period. It definitely should be played but just be warned that you will get sucked in and it will be glorious.
4. Stardew Valley – ConcernedApe
Famously created and developed by a single individual – Eric Barone – Stardew Valley is the game you want to play if you are looking for a nice chill experience that you can just take at your own pace. Break free of the clutches of Joja Corporation and run your inherited dilapidated farm the way you want to! Also, a good game if after the pandemic you are thinking of leaving your job and buying a farm – play Stardew Valley first to see if it is right for you! Although I have to say that I bet actual farming would be quite a bit less fun than virtual farming but hey to each their own. The game also gets a lot of updates which means it is always fresh and changing.
5. Cuphead – Studio MDHR
Cuphead is an awesome, difficult run and gun game from Studio MDHR. What sets it apart though is its amazing art style which makes it pretty much feel as if you are playing an old 1930s era cartoon because actually you are. These kinds of things amaze me that computers have come so far that we went from watching cartoons to literally playing cartoons within the span of a generation. Anyway, you know a game a is going to be good if the developers believe in it so much that they are literally willing to mortgage their house to get the game made. For that level of risk you owe it to them to buy a copy of their game! Go help Cuphead and Mugman round up those contracts! Bonus: Cuphead – the delicious last course dropped in 2022 so for more Cuphead and Mugman hi-jinx pick that one up too!
6. Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout – Mediatonic
Technically Mediatonic is no longer independent as it was acquired by Epic Games but at the time of Fall Guys development they were still independent so we are going to count it here. This game is an absolute blast of round cartoonish characters trying to survive crazy game show style games. As an added bonus its free to download so get in there and win those game shows!
